Technologies Currently In use

Karen posted some of these in another post. To help keep organized, I suggest starting separate posts for each area we are addressing may help. I took notes on scratch paper at the beach but can't seem to find where I put them at the moment. It's now almost 11 so I will add what I found in the morning. In the meantime, feel free to add to this post whatever you have come up with. Once we brainstorm the list, I will compile it and present for our final draft. Sound good? 2. Trying it again! I basically found the same information. I just put important points from some areas.

    Technologies currently in use:

Online Courses - Courses delivered through the web using the learning management system (Blackboard Campus Edition 8 (CE8)

Hybrid courses - combine face-to-face classroom instruction with online learning.

Coursework divided between on-campus meetings and web-based activities.

Telecourses - various video options are available for telecourses such as video viewed at viewing site; video checked out for home use; video may be rented ; or video on Demand.

    Management of technologies:

Registration - using the normal registration process which is based on earned credits and gives students with more credits the opportunity to select courses before students with fewer credits.

Students should register as soon as they are allowed because course avaliability will become restricted.

    Access of course :

Students will need a computer which has a connection to the Internet

Computer must be a PC or a Macintosh

Telecourse students may need access to video and/or audio playback devices

Access to audiovisual devices and computers is available

    Online course conducted:

    email

    log in information

Blackboard Learn 9 provision for instructor

Features would include discussion boards, chatrooms, web links, and assignment and assessment tools.

    1. Features available with Blackboard 9 include test taking online, ability to check grades, collaborative tools to facilitate working in groups, labs capability, blogs, discussion boards, wiki pages and through Blackboardprofile which is separate from the BB account, students can be linked through twitter and Facebook.

I agree with Karen that the limitations regarding use of smartphones and tablets is a good avenue for improving current protocol.

  3. Hey guys, The above information is correct. I just finished speaking to my co-worker Alexis. I actually conducted a small interview with her. She is taking online courses at Nassau Community College for the summer. She said the software they use is podcasts. She can retrieve the lesson at anytime because it is previously recorded. Therefore they are basically an asynchronous environment. She likes the idea of being able to control when she listens to the lesson; however, she wish there was another technology tool used for faster feedback from the instructor. She mentioned a two-way commuication tool such as webcasts or live seminars. Alexis stated "It takes time for to recieve feedback from my teacher, I have to either wait until she posts it on Blackboard or wait for an e-mail."

  4. For some of the improvements for NCC.
NCC also uses Facebook. Other social media could be added for the improvement such as Twitter, FaceTime, and VoiceThread.

  6. Since we are all finding more or less the same information, I will do some further research about each of the existing technologies such as Blackboard 9 to determine exactly what they offer. That might help to pinpoint what features these tools don't have so we can determine other tools to address areas of improvement.

Shantell mentioned ways to enhance communication between student and instructor. My daughter was in a course which used blackboard as the main platform and she had similar complaints about instructor accessibility. Maybe text messaging between the instructor and students should be an option for faster feedback?

  7. I think text messaging, Facetime, Skype, and Twitter are all possibilites for faster feedback.

    1. I would agree. I tried to find other tools but I was unable to do so. To me, emailing would also be a possibility for faster feedback.

    2. I think the key with email is that it has to be to an address that is checked regularly or it's just like having to wait for responses through the class forum.

  8. I also think that the facilitator should have set hours students can call, twitter, facetime, or use other faster tools for feedback. What do all of you think?

  9. Yes. Otherwise it can become chaotic.

  10. Here is what I have on upgrades or changes:

Current innovative technology, training, and support from faculty and staff should provide to the diverse student population to enhance learning, and prepare the adult learner for a technology-based society.

There should be a desiginated administrator responsible for conducting technology training needs in the areas of learning management system, classroom technology, video streaming and teleconferencing technology, campus computer labs, mobile computing, and web 2.0 applications.
Resources should also be allocated for technology training needs assessment, trainings, and professional development. Technology trainings should be designed, delivered, and assessed.
